19 – A Garment from the First Life

John teaches in the nights, John in the evenings of the nights
John teaches in the nights and says
In the name of my father I shine
And praise the man (who is) my creator
I delivered my soul from the world
and from works that are evil and not right

The seven question me,
the dead who have not seen Life.
They say, “In whose strength do you stand,
and in praise of whom do you teach?”
I say to them, “In my father’s strength I stand
and in praise of the man (who is) my creator.

No great house is built in Judah
and no throne is set up in Jerusalem
I did not love imperfection
nor the glass from which wine is drunk.
I did not love food for the body
and the evil eye did not fall upon me.
I have not forgotten my friend by night
and I have not forgotten the sublime Jordan.
I have not forgotten my baptism,
and I have not forgotten my pure sign
I have not forgotten Sunday
and the dawn of the day (the time of morning devotions) did not condemn me
I have not forgotten Shilmai and Nidbai [two Uthras, guardian spirits of running water]
Their dwelling place is the house of greatness.
They purify and they raise me up,
and they know that in me is no imperfection or deficiency.”

When John said these things, Life was pleased with him from start to finish.
The Seven greeted him,
and the Twelve bowed before him and said to him these (things):

“You made (performed?) that which you said, John.
You did not lie about one of them.
Your voice is pleasant and lovely,
and no one compares to you.
Your speech in your mouth is pleasant and precious.
The rain that gave to you a garment from First Life,
gave a garment from the First Life to Adam the man,
gave a garment from the First Life to Adam the man,
gave a garment from the First Life to Adam the man,
gave a garment from the First Life to Ram the man,
gave a garment from the First Life to Shurbai the man,
gave a garment from the First Life to Shem the son of Noah,
he gave to him – and now, he gave to you, to belong to you.
He granted you John that you might ascend from your house in the desert,
in order for all who are righteous to be forgiven.
He ascends with you to the place of light.
All who are not righteous will be questioned in the purgatories.
And life is victorious.
